If you are a blogger you have probably heard of Blogtober and maybe you are thinking about doing it. For those of you who don’t blog and don’t know what Blogtober is it’s just like it sounds it’s when bloggers all over the world write blog posts every day for the entire month of October. Bloggers do this every year but for me personally, I could never get into the right mindset to want to write every single day. I need a break from writing every now and then to help me refocus and when you write every day you have very little time to take breaks because you have to constantly be thinking about your next topic whereas if you write a couple days a week you have a little more time. I love participating in challenges and I have participated in quite a few but this one, in particular, I have never had any interest in doing. Blogtober has never really appealed to me and probably never will and today I am going to talk why.
Planning topics is hard work- If you are a blogger you can probably relate to how difficult it is to come up with blog topics. For me personally, I sometimes struggle with coming up with content twice a week so why would torture myself to write every day? Writing blog posts sometimes takes me all day so can you imagine if I did that every day for an entire month? I wouldn’t have time to do anything else and after the challenge ended I would most likely be so burned out from blogging you probably wouldn’t hear from me for a good six months to a year and you might even think I quit. I would use all my blog topics during the challenge that I wouldn’t have any left after it ended so I would have no choice but to take an incredibly long break to brainstorm some more topics. After the challenge, I could lose blogging motivation and you never know if I would even want to return!
It’s Spina Bifida Awareness Month!- Blogtober also falls in the same month as Spina Bifida Awareness Month and for me personally, I find it more important to spread awareness about my disability than to come up with a bunch of generic topics that you probably won’t take much away from. This blog exists because I wanted to help spread awareness about my disability and for me, it is important that I spread awareness during the most important time of the year. Whether or not you have Spina Bifida you will still be able to take something away from disability-related blog posts whereas my other blog posts you may not be able to take away much. Sidenote: If you have Spina Bifida, are a parent of a child with Spina Bifida or are a close friend I will be accepting contributions during the entire month of October. If you have a story that you think could provide value to my readers please reach out I’d love to share your story!
Quality won’t be as good- For me personally I am not willing to sacrifice the quality of my content just to show that I can write every day for an entire month. I know that if I really wanted to I could write every day but the real question is do I really want to? No, I do not! When you write everyday the content you write will not be nearly as thought out than if you had two days to prepare it. You won’t have the time to prepare a more thought out blog post and for me personally, I find that more important than writing a bunch of quick generic blog posts that have no meaning. I would much rather write less more thought out blog posts than more meaningless ones. I am trying to grow my audience and I want my readers to take something away from my posts and if I am writing daily chances are that won’t happen because I will feel too rushed to get something published.
Blogtober is a great challenge for bloggers to participate in but it is not for me personally because not only does it always fall in the same month of Spina Bifida Awareness Month but it also just doesn’t appeal to me. I think this challenge could be a good idea for new bloggers in helping them grow their audience but for me personally, it would be more stressful than enjoyable. My writing has gotten better since the day of launch but I still wouldn’t say it’s strong and taking something that is already weak and making me do it more when I don’t have to will only make me lose focus and not want to do it anymore. I need a break from writing every once and a while and when you write daily you have very little time to take breaks. Maybe one day I will feel confident enough to participate in one of these challenges but for now, what I am doing is doable and makes me happy. I would hate for that to change!
